LYC Fall Sailing Programs

LYC Green Fleet Opti Program

The Lauderdale Yacht Club Green Fleet is so excited for the upcoming fall season.
This program will work to shape confident, proficient racers from those who have had some sailing experience in the past but want to work to improve their skills and become more successful on the race course and as skippers in general.

A small sailor to coach ratio and safe, protected sailing area make for a great opportunity to get your sailor out on the water improving their skills in no time. Training sessions are held in the Stranahan River directly in front of the Lauderdale Yacht Club. LYC provides Opti charter boats and equipment for $25/month. Practice is held Thursdays from 3:30 pm to 7 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 am to 3 pm. Coaching is included not only for every practice but for two youth regattas in the fall: Halloween Howler in Miami, and Junior Olympics in Jensen Beach! Accommodations for the length of the regattas and registration fees are the responsibility of the parents.

Practices will include, but are not limited to, workouts, games, practice on the water, drills off the water, rigging lessons, knot lessons, towing to new venues, etc.

Under the direction of Sailing Director John Casey, the sailors will be coached by Veteran Green Fleet Coach Sharon Seymour-Johnson. Sharon Seymour-Johnson is Canadian born and has coached at LYC for 13 years, where she developed the Mercury Mentor program. She has been a certified sailing coach in dinghies and keelboats since 1987. She graduated from Laurentian University with an honors degree in Human Movement, a major in Outdoor Adventure Leadership, and a minor in Environmental Studies. Sharon also served for four years in search and rescue and environmental response with the Canadian Coast Guard. She has over 30 years of dinghy, keelboat and offshore racing experience including Olympic campaigns in the Europe Dinghy and 470. She was on the J24 Canadian Champion team and skipper on the 82’ Maxi racing yacht Nirvana. She has taught sailing across Canada and in the US, teaching at the Coast Guard Academy, Lauderdale Yacht Club and as Director of the Beverly Yacht Club Sailing Program in Massachusetts.
